Explore gesture, transparency, and layers at your own pace.

Skin Papers are thin, translucent papers built layer by layer with ink and wax. In two recorded classes I show you how I make them, step by step, so you can work along in your own studio.

What you will explore

  • Paper: thin, translucent papers such as rice paper, Japanese papers and tissue.
  • Wax: how encaustic wax and heat join the layers and let the light through.
  • Gesture: big, free ink brushstrokes inspired by Zen painting.
  • Layers: building a piece one thin layer at a time.
  • Transparency: letting each layer show what lies beneath.
  • Memory: letters, handwriting and personal papers inside your work.

Zen painting gives you the marks. Encaustic wax gives the papers their transparency and joins the layers. Skin Papers bring the two together.

The classes

Class 1

Zen painting and Skin Papers

We prepare the papers and create the first layers. We work with ink and gesture on thin, translucent papers, and see how wax, heat and paper behave together: how deep the wax goes in, and how the layers begin to hold light.

Class 2

Skin Papers

The papers become compositions: image transfers, collage with personal papers and letters, and layers of encaustic until the piece finds its own depth.

03

Before you start

Meet Gabriela

I am a visual artist and teacher. I work with paper, encaustic and mixed media, and in my work gesture and memory always go together: layers that keep traces, marks that stay visible.

I have worked with encaustic for 18 years and have been teaching for more than 23.

In September 2026 I was at Residencia Lagos in Mexico City, where I developed my research project Habitar mi propio trazo (Inhabiting my own mark), about the mark as presence and the body as a tool. It is ongoing research.
